Aldosterone

A steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. Aldosterone acts on the kidney to retain sodium ions and water and excrete potassium and hydrogen ions. Aldosterone secretion is increased by angiotensin II.

Prevention of diabetes & cardiovascular disease in patients w/ impaired glucose tolerance: rationale & design of Nateglinide & Valsartan

Top

Califf RM, Boolell M, Haffner SM, Bethel MA, McMurray J, Duggal A, Holman RR; NAVIGATOR Study Group. Prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in patients with impaired glucose tolerance: rationale and design of the Nateglinide And Valsartan in Impaired Glucose Tolerance Outcomes Research (NAVIGATOR) Trial. Am Heart J. 2008;156(4):623-632. Patients with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) have increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lifestyle modification and medication can prevent or delay progression to diabetes (PD), but whether such interventions also reduce the risk of CVD has not been rigorously tested.

Effects of torcetrapib in patients at high risk for coronary events

Barter PJ, Caulfield M, Eriksson M, et al; for the ILLUMINATE Investigators. Effects of torcetrapib in patients at high risk for coronary events. N Engl J Med. 2007;357(21):2109-22. Inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has been shown to have a substantial effect on plasma lipoprotein levels. We investigated whether torcetrapib, a potent CETP inhibitor, might reduce major cardiovascular events.

The role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in diabetes and its vascular complications

Top

Cooper ME. The role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in diabetes and its vascular complications. Am J Hypertension.. 2004;17:16S-20S. Clinical trials have demonstrated the benefit of blood pressure (BP) reduction in reducing the risk of cardiovascular and renal complications in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and the heart

Top

Lim HS, MacFadyen RJ, Lip GY. Diabetes mellitus, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and the heart. Arch Intern Med. 2004;164:1737-1748. With diabetes mellitus reaching epidemic proportions, mainly secondary to obesity, the impact of cardiovascular disease due to this combination makes it a dominant public health problem during the first quarter of the 21st century.

The Tissue Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System in Diabetes Mellitus

Top

Hanes DS, Nahar A, Weir MR. The Tissue Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System in Diabetes Mellitus. Curr Hypertens Rep. 2004;6:98-105. Diabetes is associated with an inordinate burden of cardiovascular and renal disease, which is expected to accelerate during the next few decades. The relationship between the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and diabetic macrovascular and microvascular disease is well established.

Mechanisms, significance and treatment of vascular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus : focus on lipid-regulating therapy

Woodman RJ, Chew GT, Watts GF. Mechanisms, significance and treatment of vascular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus : focus on lipid-regulating therapy. Drugs. 2005;65:31-74. Endothelial dysfunction and increased arterial stiffness occur early in the pathogenesis of diabetic vasculopathy. They are both powerful independent predictors of cardiovascular risk.

The Metabolic Response of Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes to a High-Protein, Weight-Maintenance Diet

In a randomized, crossover 5-week study design, we recently reported that a weight-maintaining diet in which the percentage of total food energy as protein was increased from 15%-30% resulted in a decrease in postprandial glucose and glycohemoglobin in people with untreated type 2 diabetes without a significant change in insulin.
