DCCT

Abbreviation for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial. DCCT was a landmark clinical trial, which showed that control of blood glucose to a level as normal as possible slows the onset and progression of microvascular complications, including retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy.

Schauer PR, Kashyap SR, Wolski K, et al. Bariatric surgery versus intensive medical therapy in obese patients with diabetes. N Engl J Med. 2012;366(17):1567-1576. The Surgical Treatment and Medications Potentially Eradicate Diabetes Efficiently (STAMPEDE) study, conducted by Schauer and colleagues, was a randomized, controlled trial comparing intensive medical therapy with surgical treatment to improve glycemic control in 150 obese subjects with type 2 diabetes.

J Diabetes and Its Complications. 2008 Oct 10. [Epub ahead of print]. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of glimepiride/metformin combination versus glibenclamide/metformin for reaching glycemic control in patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus.

10-year follow-up of intensive glucose control in type 2 diabetes

Holman RR, Paul SK, Bethel MA, Matthews DR, Neil HA. 10-year follow-up of intensive glucose control in type 2 diabetes. N Engl J Med. 2008;359(15):1577-1589. During the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who received intensive glucose therapy had a lower risk of microvascular complications than did those receiving conventional dietary therapy.

Effects of a weight management program on body composition and metabolic parameters in overweight children: a randomized controlled trial

Top

Savoye M, Shaw M, Dziura J, et al. Effects of a weight management program on body composition and metabolic parameters in overweight children: a randomized controlled trial. JAMA. 2007;297(24):2697-704. Pediatric obesity has escalated to epidemic proportions, leading to an array of comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes in youth. Since most overweight children become overweight adults, this chronic condition results in serious metabolic complications by early adulthood.

Impact of blood pressure control and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy on new-onset microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetes

Ruggenenti P, Perna A, Ganeva M, Ene-Iordache B, Remuzzi G, for the BENEDICT Study Group. Impact of blood pressure control and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy on new-onset microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetes: a post hoc analysis of the BENEDICT trial. J Am Soc Nephrol. 2006;17:3472-3481. For assessment of the independent renoprotective effect of blood pressure (BP) control and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy, the relationships of baseline BP, BP reduction, and follow-up BP with the incidence of persistent microalbuminuria were evaluated in 1204 hypertensive patients who had type 2 diabetes and normoalbuminuria and were included in the BErgamo Nephrologic Diabetic Complications Trial (BENEDICT) study.

Renal protection in diabetes: role of glycemic control

Fioretto P, Bruseghin M, Berto I, Gallina P, Manzato E, Mussap M. Renal protection in diabetes: role of glycemic control. J Am Soc Nephrol. 2006;17:S86-S89. Diabetes is the most common cause of ESRD in Western countries. This article describes the impact of glycemic control in the various stages of the disease and considers the impact of tight glycemic control on the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN).

Aims/hypothesis: Ninety percent of all men with diabetes have Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, and erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in this patient group.

Effect of Fenofibrate on Progression of Coronary-Artery Disease in Type 2 Diabetes: the Diabetes Atherosclerosis Intervention Study, a Randomised Study

Top

Diabetes Atherosclerosis Intervention Study Investigators. Effect of Fenofibrate on Progression of Coronary-Artery Disease in Type 2 Diabetes: the Diabetes Atherosclerosis Intervention Study, a Randomised Study. Lancet. 2001;357:905-910. Atherosclerosis is the most common complication of diabetes. Correction of hyperglycaemia helps to prevent microvascular complications but has little effect on macrovascular disease.
