FEBRUARY 24, 2014: The National Diabetes Education Initiative® (NDEI®) today announces the publication of a patient education handout that visually depicts where and how medications used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes work in the body.
The downloadable patient resource, available on-demand at NDEI’s award-winning website, NDEI.org, describes the oral and injectable prescription medications that are available in the United States for lowering blood glucose in type 2 diabetes. A silhouette of the human body is the stage for the major organ systems through which type 2 diabetes medications exert their effect. Medications are grouped by class and linked to their site of action in the body. Generic and brand names for each medication are provided as a reference.
NDEI offers an extensive collection of downloadable patient education handouts and clinical practice tools that cover myriad topics related to diabetes management. These materials are designed to enhance communication channels between healthcare professionals and patients with type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes affects nearly 26 million US adults, or 8.3% of the population aged 20 years or older; type 2 diabetes accounts for roughly 95% of all cases. Recent estimates from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that 20% to 33% of the US population will have type 2 diabetes by 2050. Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, and new cases of blindness—and a major cause of heart disease and stroke, contributing to $174 billion of healthcare expenditure in the United States.
NDEI.org is a premier, award-winning destination for diabetes education that addresses knowledge and practice gaps among healthcare professionals with the goal of enhancing patient care. The website unites more than 45,000 registered members who enjoy premium content offerings and professional diabetes education opportunities, including a slide library featuring more than 1,500 downloadable slides on diabetes education topics; guideline compendia; on-demand educational programs, including case studies, expert webcasts, and newsletters; and patient education materials. Membership is free. For more information, visit www.NDEI.org.
NDEI is a multi-component educational initiative that addresses issues spanning the diabetes continuum, from epidemiology and pathophysiology of the disease and its associated complications and comorbidities, to the therapeutic options for prevention and treatment. Since 1996, NDEI has partnered with preeminent thought leaders to provide a diverse anthology of evidence-based diabetes educational content that meaningfully accommodates the unique learning needs and clinical challenges of its target audience.
