New to podcasting?

What is a Podcast?
In its most common form, a podcast is an audio recording posted to the Internet, similar to an on-demand radio show.  Podcasting is a method of distributing audio, video, and even print pieces via the Internet that enables users to subscribe to desired content.  As published, new content is delivered automatically to your computer.  You listen, watch, or read the content whenever you desire.

What's the easiest way to participate?
If you wish to simply listen to a single issue or episode on your computer, go to our podcast page, select the podcast of your choice, and download (simply click on the link to stream or right click to download the MP3 file).  Provided your computer has speakers, you will be able to participate immediately.

Is there an advantage to subscribing to NDEI Podcasts and how do I do it?
The advantage to subscribing is that you'll receive NDEI podcasts on a regular basis, just like a newsletter.  New podcasts are automatically downloaded to your computer.

There are two ways to subscribe to NDEI podcasts: via Apple's iTunes music store or by subscribing to an RSS feed.  Remember, if you don't want to subscribe, you can always manually listen to individual podcasts from our podcast site.

Subscribe via Apple iTunes
NDEI podcasts are now included in Apple's iTunes Music Store. With iTunes, subscribing, downloading, managing, and listening to podcasts has never been easier!

Current iTunes Users: If you already have iTunes 4.9 or higher installed on your computer, you may follow a direct link to launch NDEI's Podcast page.

Don't Have iTunes? If you don't have Apple iTunes on your computer, don't worry—it's free and easy to download and use:

  1. First, download Apple iTunes for free. It is available for both Mac and Windows users.
  2. Once you have iTunes installed and launched on your computer, you may access NDEI podcasts in two ways:
    • Follow a direct link to NDEI's Podcast page.
    • Launch iTunes. Click the Music Store on the source list on the left hand side of your iTunes window. Then select the Podcasts link on the left side of the main page. To find NDEI podcasts, simply search for "NDEI" in the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the iTunes window. Once you are on NDEI's podcast page, you have the option sample a podcast, download a single podcast, or subscribe to all NDEI podcasts.
  3. Once you have downloaded one or more podcasts, you may choose to listen to them on your computer with iTunes or transfer them to your iPod. Below are several links that will answer questions about using Apple's iTunes and iPod to download, manage, and listen to podcasts:

Subscribe with RSS
You can to subscribe to our RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed so new podcasts will be downloaded automatically to your computer.

  1. Download and install free podcasting software, such as iPodder:
    • For PC (Windows 2000 or XP): iPodder
    • For Mac (OS X 10.3 or higher): iPodder
  2. Subscribe to the NDEI podcast RSS feed. Simply load the feed URL (http://www.ndei.org/v2/Files/clinical_insights6.xml) into your podcast software (right click and "copy shortcut" for PC; cut and paste or type URL for Mac) and set the podcast program to download the new podcasts.

What if I only wish to listen?
To simply download and listen to a single podcast, go to our podcast page, select the podcast of your choice, and download (simply click on the link to stream or right click to download the MP3 file). You can also listen to podcasts in the Apple iTunes podcast directory (link will launch iTunes).

What equipment do I need to listen to a podcast?
Most podcasts are audio files in MP3 format. Any playback device, such as an MP3 player or computer with a sound card and speakers, will work. Synching them to an MP3 player, however, typically means downloading them to your computer and then moving them to the device. This process can be automated using podcatching software, such as iTunes.

Do I need an iPod?
No, any software or hardware that plays MP3s will work.

Can I listen to podcasts on my mobile phone?
If your phone can play MP3s and has a way to load channels or items from the desktop, from a wireless connection, or from the phone network then yes, most certainly. As podcasting grows, device support and synching will become much easier.
