Edward S. Horton, MD, is vice president and director of clinical research at Joslin Diabetes Center and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr Horton also serves as cochairman of the Education Council for the National Diabetes Education Initiative™.
From 1993 to 1997, Dr Horton was chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Deaconess Hospital and medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center. With more than 200 publications to his credit, Dr Horton has served as associate editor of Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and the American Journal of Physiology. In 1996, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Physician Educator Award from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). He was also honored with the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service from the ADA and the Robert H. Herman Award from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN). Dr Horton has also served as president of both the ADA and the ASCN.
Dr Horton's research interests include obesity and insulin resistance as they relate to diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease; the regulation of glucose transport and metabolism in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue; and the effects of exercise and physical training on insulin sensitivity. Dr Horton received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and trained in internal medicine and endocrinology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.
