Prevalence of Diabetes, IFG, and IGT in US Population 40-74 Years of Age

  • This figure compares the prevalences of diabetes, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in US adults between the ages of 40 and 74 as determined by the Second and by the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.
  • According to ADA criteria, the prevalence of diabetes increased from 8.9% in the years 1976-1980 to 12.3% in the years 1988-1994. When WHO diagnostic criteria are utilized, a similar increase in diabetes prevalence is seen, from 11.4% to 14.3%.
  • In the same period, the prevalence of IFG increased from 6.5% to 9.7%, whereas that of IGT remained constant at 15.6%.
