Effect of Pioglitazone and Metformin on Glucose Control in Drug-Naïve Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
Pavo I et al. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2003;88:1637-1645.
- In a 32-week study of 205 drug-naïve patients with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes, pioglitazone and metformin achieved comparable levels of glucose control.
- Patients who had never been treated with oral antihyperglycemic medication were randomized to 30 mg/d of pioglitazone or 850 mg/d of metformin. Pioglitazone dosage was titrated to 45 mg/d in 77% of the subgroup and metformin to 2,550 mg/d in 73% in order to achieve fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels of <126 mg/dL.
- By the end of the study, improvements in A1C and FPG were similar in both groups.
